Google Business Profile hours: how to stop calls to a closed shop

A good share of the calls you miss arrive because Google told someone you were open. Your Business Profile has three kinds of hours and a closure setting, and most owners only ever fill in the first. Here is what each one does, from Google's own help pages.

The short answer: set all three kinds of hours on your Google Business Profile, not only the first. Main hours say when you are normally open. Special hours cover holidays and one-off days, and Google suggests confirming them for official holidays even when nothing changes; if you do not, a warning that your hours "might differ" may show. More hours cover a single service with its own times. For a closure of seven days or more, use Temporarily closed instead. Then make your voicemail and website say the same thing. To see how many calls reach you while you are closed, run the 20-minute missed-call audit.

Why hours on Google cause missed calls

Think about the caller. They search for a plumber, see "Open" beside your name, and tap the phone number. If you closed an hour ago, or it is a holiday, that call rings out. You did nothing wrong on the phone; the mistake was made on your profile.

We cannot tell you what share of missed calls this explains, because we found no public figure we would stand behind. You can find your own: mark the missed calls in one week that arrived outside your real hours. The sheet in the missed-call audit has a column for the time of each call.

Main hours

Google's help page on editing a profile describes main hours as the way "to update your customers on when you're open," with the option to mark the business closed on given days.

Two habits keep them honest:

  • Enter the hours you answer the phone, not the hours you are on jobs. If the office line is unanswered after 4, your profile should not say 6.
  • Check them when the season changes. Many trades keep longer summer hours and forget to change back.

Everything else on this page depends on main hours being set. If you take calls outside them for emergencies, your options are in after-hours calls.

Special hours, for holidays and one-off days

Special hours change a single date without touching your normal week. Google's page says you can set them "so that your regular hours don't change."

The steps it gives: open your Business Profile, go to Edit profile and then Hours, and click Edit next to Special hours. Choose a date, set your open and close times or mark the day closed, and save. Two details from the same page:

  • "For special hours to show up on your Business Profile, set your business hours to 'Open with main hours.'"
  • "A set of special hours can't exceed 24 hours." For hours that run past midnight, split them into two sets.

Use them for more than public holidays: a staff training morning, a family event, the day of a trade show. Any day a caller would otherwise be told you are open when you are not. What those callers hear instead is up to your greeting; see what to say in a business voicemail greeting.

The holiday step most owners skip

Here is the part that surprises people. Even if you keep normal hours on a holiday, Google wants you to say so. Its page: "It's a good idea to confirm your hours for official holidays, even if they're the same as your regular hours."

The reason is on Google's page about holidays. When hours for a holiday are not confirmed, "a warning may appear on your Business Profile that tells users your business hours might differ." A customer who sees that warning has a reason to call a competitor whose profile simply says "Open."

So twice a year, sit down with a calendar and set special hours for every holiday ahead, open or closed. It takes a few minutes. While you are at it, record a holiday voicemail greeting; wording is in our guide to business voicemail greetings.

More hours, for one service

Google describes more hours this way: "You can select the hours for specific services your business offers such as delivery, takeout, drive through, and pickup." It recommends keeping them inside your main hours, and notes that "More hours don't display until you first set regular hours."

The steps: Business Profile, Edit profile, Hours, then under "Add more hours" choose a type, pick the days and times, and save.

For a service trade the listed types may not fit, and that is fine; leave them empty rather than forcing one. They matter most for shops with a counter and a pickup window that close at different times. What NewFrontDesk itself handles, which is not your Google profile, is on how it works.

Closed for a week or more

Special hours are for single days. For longer breaks, Google's page says that "if your business is closed for 7 or more days in a row," you should mark it as Temporarily closed instead.

That covers a winter shutdown, a family emergency or a long holiday. Remember to reopen it the day you are back. A profile still marked closed is the same problem in reverse: callers who never ring at all. While you are away, a form or chat on your website can still take messages; see after-hours calls.

Make everything else agree

Hours on Google only help if the rest of your front door says the same thing.

  1. Website footer and contact page: the same hours, word for word.
  2. Voicemail greeting: your hours and when you return calls.
  3. Call forwarding: if calls go to a second person after hours, they need to know the schedule too. Steps are in how to forward business calls.
  4. Website chat or form: something that takes a message when nobody is there, so a closed sign is not a dead end.

The last one is what NewFrontDesk's web chat does: it takes a visitor's details at any hour and puts them in one inbox for the morning. It does not manage your Google profile. Questions: call (346) 913-7215 or request setup.

Questions

About hours on Google

How do I set holiday hours on Google?

Google's help page: open your Business Profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours, and click Edit next to Special hours. Pick the date, set your times or mark it closed, and save. Your main hours must be set first.

What happens if I do not confirm holiday hours?

Google's page on holidays says a warning may appear on your Business Profile that tells users your business hours might differ. Confirming removes the doubt, even if your hours are the same as usual.

Should I use special hours for a two-week closure?

No. Google's page says that if your business is closed for 7 or more days in a row, mark it as Temporarily closed instead of using special hours.

What are "more hours" for?

Hours for one service that differ from your main hours. Google's examples are delivery, takeout, drive through and pickup. They do not display until regular hours are set.

Does NewFrontDesk update my Google profile?

No. You manage your Business Profile yourself in Google. NewFrontDesk's product is web chat, a form link and a lead inbox.
